I’ve been collecting music for most of my life, and have spent prodigious (probably unhealthy) amounts of time investigating different genres. My first taste of club music was in the late 90s, when I heard acts like Underworld, the Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Coldcut, and Daft Punk. It was love at first sound. I started listening to the Breezeblock on BBC Radio 1 every week.
I spent my senior year of high school as an exchange student in Japan. During this time, my Rotarian host (who would later invite me to jam with his Beatles tribute band) brought me to a record store owned by a friend. I picked out a few LPs to preview in the store, and fell in love with the music of Curtis Mayfield on the spot. I listened to his album “Give, Get, Take and Have” dozens of times in the following months, and began to to hoard as much soul and funk as I could get my hands on. In college, I got really into hip hop and started producing beats. I continued to make hip hop instrumentals until the occurrence of two life-changing events: electro house blew up in a big way, and my best friend got a MIDI controller.
I was hooked. I started out by DJing at my friend’s parties, playing predominantly electro and fidget (a lot of Crookers). I developed a taste for warmer sounds, and started to play filter house a la RoulĂ© and Crydamoure. Eventually, growing tired of the drum machine beats and cut-up vocals characteristic of the genre, I began to search for the sources of the samples being used. That was the beginning of my love affair with disco, which continues to this day.
I relish the opportunity to discover new music, and always attempt to share it with others by playing diverse sets. My main criterion is great production/sound quality. I’m a sucker for soulful vocals and pianos. Mostly, I just play tunes that send chills up my spine and make me feel glad to be alive.
